Charitable Giving Ideas to obtain your greatest tax benefit:

Bunching:  The standard deduction has been greatly increased, making it more difficult to itemize deductions. Consider bunching your contributions (and other itemized deductions) into one tax year.

Securities:  Gift Securities that have increased in value instead of selling and incurring a capital gain. Sell securities that have decreased in value, take a tax loss and donate the cash.

IRA Distribution:  If you are over age 70 ½ use your IRA to gift directly to charity. The distribution is then not taxed to you and you need not itemize deductions.

Donor Advised Fund:  Set up a charitable fund. It can be funded with appreciated securities or cash. Use to accelerate or bunch donations, then contributions may be made over several years.

Above Line Deduction: New for 2020. Individuals, who do not itemize deductions may now deduct up to $300 for charitable contributions.

As always, taxes can be complex. Be sure to consult your tax advisor for your individual situation.

Bequest
You can designate St. Leo as a beneficiary in your will, life insurance, retirement plan, charitable remainder trust and other vehicles. These are wonderful ways to provide a substantial gift and to provide estate tax savings for your heirs.

It is safe and appropriate to consult an attorney who is experienced in probate matters to draft your will.  Such professional preparation is particularly important if your financial situation is complex or there are special family or tax concerns.

Review your will once a year; any changes need to be carefully executed.  Simply crossing out or adding names and amounts will usually not legally change your will.

If you would like to include St. Leo Church in your will, our legal name is:  St. Leo the Great Church.

Securities
A gift of appreciated securities that you have held for more than one year is often the most economic way to give.  You will be eligible to take a federal income tax deduction equal to the fair market value of the stock on the date of the gift and will not have to recognize the appreciation as a capital gain.

Click here for information about making a gift of securities:  How to Give Securities to St. Leo's

Tax Information

All contributions to St. Leo the Great Church are deductible for those who itemize their taxes.  We are happy to provide an end-of-the-year financial statement for tax purposes upon request.  Please call 51-921-1044 or email info@saint-leo.org.
